Vertical living at it’s best: this six-storey Tudor folly – built 1578/79 – has a single room on each floor with the sitting room at the top to capture amazing views across the River Orwell and Suffolk countryside.
Centuries later, the tower was bought by Claire Hunt and her husband in 1962, who used it as a holiday home for sailing on the Orwell. In 1999, Mrs Hunt very generously gave Freston Tower to the Landmark Trust so that, in her words: ‘lots of people can enjoy a building where I have been very happy’.
